About two months before beach season I am always looking to get into the best shape of my life. I have spent all winter hiding indoors from the cold, slacking on my fitness routine, and eating chilly-weather comfort foods, which tend to pack on the pounds. Every year before beach season, I pull out my Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred workout DVD to get my butt in gear and to lose those couple pesky pounds I have gained over the freezing hibernation months.
Every single summer I thank this DVD for my beach body! It works wonders and does not require much time at all. However, just because it is not time consuming does not mean it is not a hard workout DVD. If you know anything about Jillian, you know she means business and does not like quitters. This workout is for people who are dead serious about getting into shape and will not make any excuses for themselves.
30 Day Shred is a fitness DVD that combines a 3-2-1 interval system. This particular system was made famous by Jillian herself and she tends to incorporate it in each and every one of her workout DVDs. This means during each interval you will be getting 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio, and 1 minute of ab work. During the 30 Day Shred you will need to commit yourself to 20 minutes of hardcore working out for 30 days. You should be working out 5-6 days per week and taking 1-2 days of rest.
The first 20 minute workout will last you one week, then you will move onto the next workout which will also last you a week, and so forth. It’s a very simple concept to follow. 30 Day Shred is supposed to help you burn more fat and calories while boosting your metabolism and giving you the endurance you need for strength training exercises.
30 Day Shred has completely changed my life. It actually is the first workout DVD I ever tried and continues to be one of my favorites. One of the best things about 30 Day Shred is that it’s the perfect workout DVD for beginners. During the first two weeks, Jillian and her crew will show beginners alternatives to some of the more difficult exercises. Because of this, there’s no pressure to overwork yourself and you can still get a decent burn going on even if you’re just starting to workout.
This workout really never gets boring. This is due the fact that Jillian provides great variety. There’s strength moves, cardio moves, ab moves, and compound moves. You will never be stuck just working one muscle area at a time. The whole purpose of this workout is to work-out several different parts of your body during each and every exercise.
30 Day Shred does not require much of a time commitment and it is not a long drawn workout program like many others are. Almost every single one of us has 20 minutes to spare each day for just one month. It also does not require much space. I have successfully completed workouts in very tiny spaces. You also do not need much equipment for this workout. All you need is a couple sets of weights and a yoga or workout mat.
The best thing about 30 Day Shred is that you really do feel the burn and you’re typically drenched in sweat in just those 20 minutes. Many people think it’s impossible to get a full body workout in such a short amount of time but all the nay-sayers will be proven wrong once they get a hold of the 30 Day Shred. As long as you’re committed to the program and eat a healthy and balanced diet, there is absolutely no way you will not see results you’re wanting.
Much like many of Jillian’s other workout DVDs, 30 Day Shred can be quite intimidating. Once you get a hang of it, it does become easier over time. I believe it’s mostly intimidating because of Jillian herself. She comes off as a bully in some of her DVDs. I wish she’d be a little bit nicer and less over-powering. However, her attitude tends to work for some people!
Secondly, 30 Day Shred is not intended for those who have had recent injuries to their lower body. There’s a lot of jumping around and there are also a ton of plyometric moves. For example, if you have a knee injury you may want to stay away from this DVD and choose one that is low impact instead.
Lastly, the warm-up and cool-down process is a bit too short. In order to decrease the chance of injury it is important to have at least 10 minutes of warm-up and cool-down. 30 Day Shred only offers about a 3 minute warmup and a 2 minute cool down. I advise doing your own warmups and cool downs before popping in the DVD.
If you’re already in shape and just looking for a little boost or if you’re just trying to quickly slim down before beach season and you do not have any injuries then I would definitely recommend 30 Day Shred. However, for those who are lacking in the fitness department or have recently been injured, I would not recommend this DVD.
Although the results are awesome, you do need to make sure you’re eating well too. As they say, getting in shape is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. You cannot expect to slim down with this DVD if you’re still eating junk food daily.
